The generous support of the Virginia Gasaway Belmont County ACS Community Investment Grant Fund and the American Cancer Society, the Barnesville Hospital Auxiliary and a Valentines Fund Raiser held at the Blue Moon Tavern allowed Barnesville Hospital to purchase a semi recumbent elliptical machine for the Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department.
We are extremely grateful to the American Cancer Society, our Auxiliary and to our community for providing the funding to purchase the elliptical machine, said David Phillips, CEO, Barnesville Hospital. The elliptical is the most versatile and most heavily utilized piece of equipment in the department. Over the course of a year, this equipment will positively impact the lives of approximately 100 individuals.
The Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation Department provides a closely monitored exercise program in order to reduce the symptoms and disability due to cardiac and pulmonary disease. The elliptical is ideal for many patients as it provides exercises for major muscle groups of upper and lower body, has zero joint impact and provides good lower back support and easy access.
If Barnesville Hospital did not offer Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehabilitation many area residents would have to travel an hour or more to the next closest facility and frankly many would not make the trip, said Elise Koski, Cardiopulmonary Manger. The elliptical machine is used for strengthening and conditioning and plays a significant role in our Cardiac Rehab program.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women, followed closely by cancer and then by chronic lower pulmonary disease. Barnesville Hospitals Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program goal is to increase the function and quality of life for cardiac and pulmonary patients.
