Barnesville Hospital’s Most Recent Cancer Recovery Exercise Class Graduates

Bridging the Gap a six week exercise class designed specifically for cancer survivors recently concluded at Barnesville Hospital. This free class was made possible by funding through the American Cancer Society Virginia Gasaway Community Investment Grant. Five participants became official graduates of this program on Thursday, June 19, 2014.

Participants attended the one hour classes on Mondays and Thursdays for a total of 12 sessions in May and June. They were instructed in exercises to strengthen and stretch target areas of their bodies to assist them to recover from the effects of cancer treatments and deconditioning. Participants increased their range of motion, improved their strength, and were educated on lifestyle changes to improve their overall health and fitness.

These six week classes are offered throughout the year and enrollment is limited and pre-registration is required. The instructors for the classes are Vicki Burghy, Physical Therapist, Judy Barrick, Occupational Therapist, and Raquel McGee, Exercise Physiologist, all of Barnesville Hospital. All three instructors are certified Cancer Exercise Specialists, a certification they achieved through coursework and testing.
